Mailing Lists

There are over 71,000 different mailing lists on the Internet ranging from bear hunting to skydiving to accounting.  Through mailing lists, you can actually get specialized e-mail addresses of individuals who might be interested in what products or services you offer.

Due to the huge number of mailing lists, they operate in several ways.

Everybody is familiar with spam mailing.  If not, this involves sending out bulk e-mails to everybody and anybody on the Internet, most of whom did not solicit them.  A good alternative to spam mailing is a subscription based mailing list.  If you have something that other people would be interested in, why not offer a weekly or monthly mailing list that features your expertise. If you start a mailing list, you will have the attention of a large number of people that are interested in what you have to say.  Some of these people are bound to buy your products.  If not, you will have made a large number of contacts who feel they know you intimately.  You never know when these people can help you in one way or another.

The second example, although not frequently used, of how mailing list works is this:  a moderator decides on a topic.  The moderator starts a discussion by sending e-mail to all members on a list topic.  The member then responds via e-mail to the moderator and then the moderator forwards all the message to everyone on the list.  Although this is not direct advertising, it provides valuable leads of people who may be interested in what you have to offer.
